The Hoyas hit the ice for the IAC Playoffs after a tough end to the regular season which saw them fall 5-2 to O’Connell. The second half of the season was a rough stretch for the Hoyas as they have not had a full roster at all this season. In the semi-finals against St. Albans the Hoyas put all the adversity behind them and shutout a young but talented St. Albans team. Midway through the first, Davidson opened up the scoring with an assist by Scola. Late in the first Cole added to the lead with a goal of his own assisted by Flannery and Prame. The Hoyas carried this momentum into the second as Davidson found the back of the net again, assisted by Scola and Chaconas. The Hoyas special teams unit would then go to work with 2 straight power play goals, both by Flannery (the first assisted by Cole and Fitzgerald & the second by Fitzgerald). The Hoyas would continue their second period dominance with a goal by Cole assisted by Fitzgerald. Davidson would complete his hat trick in dramatic fashion with a powerplay goal assisted by Fitzgerald with 2 seconds left in the second period. Will Boggs posted his third shutout of the year with two of the three coming against St. Albans. The Hoyas move on to the IAC Championship for the second year in a row and will have a rematch against Landon on Thursday at 4:00 in Rockville. Hoya Saxa!

Hoyas Break Slump on Senior Night with a 7-2 Win over Bullis

By Chris Lemmo 02/03/2018, 12:00am EST

The night started with a ceremony to honor Seniors, Will Boggs, Daniel Cole, Michael Davidson and Nathanial Deleede. The Hoyas hit the ice with a slow start, but midway through the first period James Flannery broke the stalemate with a goal assisted by Michael Davidson and Matthew Scola. Bullis came back quickly to knott it at 1 before the first intermission. The Hoyas dominated the second period opening up the scoring parade with a goal by Alex Chaconas assisted by Pat Fitzgerald. A few minutes later James Flannery (assisted by Marco Nascone) went top shelf to increase the lead to 3-1. Just over a minute later Alex Chaconas would score again on the power play with an assist by James Flannery and Pat Fitzgerald. Alex Chaconas continued his career night two minutes later adding another goal to put the score at 5-1. Later in the second Alex Chaconas got his fourth goal of the evening with an assist by Nathanial Deleede. The Hoyas would tack on one more with a goal by Matthew Scola assisted by Nathanial Deleede before Bullis would score the final goal of the game. This 7-2 win was crucial after a tough stretch for the Hoyas that included losses against Gonzaga and Dematha in the last two games. This big win brings the Hoyas back to 500 in league play and sets up the final and most critical game of the season so far against O’Connell next Tuesday. Hoya Saxa!

Hoyas Suffer 5-3 Setback Against Landon

By Chris Lemmo 01/21/2018, 2:00pm EST

It’s been many years since the Hoyas hosted Landon at the Cabin, and both schools came out in full force Friday night to mark this occasion. Over the years this game has developed into one of the premier rivalries in high school hockey in the DMV. The Cabin was loud and rocking as both teams hit the ice. Although the Hoyas dominated the first period in shots on goal they were unable to put anything on the board and went into the second period down 1-0. Early in the second the Hoyas knotted it up at 1-1 with a goal by James Flannery assisted by Alex Chaconas. The Bears wasted no time in taking the lead again scoring just seconds later to take a 2-1 advantage. Midway through the second Alex Chaconas was able to capitalize on a five minute major penalty for boarding to tie it at 2 on a power play goal. Back and forth play continued as Landon ended up back on top with a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period. Midway through the third the Bears looked to put the game away as they scored to go ahead 4-2. The Hoyas would not go down without a fight as they cut the lead to 1 on a power play goal by Alex Chaconas assisted by James Flannery. The Hoyas pulled the goalie to setup an exciting final seconds of the game but Landon put the game away with an empty net goal to extend their lead to 5-3. The Hoyas look to get back on track this week against West Potomac in a non-league game Wednesday and Gonzaga in a MAPHL game Friday at Cabin John at 6:30.
