The Hoyas came off the holiday break a little rusty with some injured players after the Purple Puck Tournament. St. John’s Cadets got off to a fast start and put one on the board early in the first period. The Cadets continued to buzz around the Hoya’s netminder Will Boggs who was able to stop an onslaught of shots before eventually giving up another goal later in the first period. Things looked bleak heading into the second with the Hoyas on a five minute penalty kill, but Alex Chaconas scored a short handed goal from James Flannery who had just returned to the lineup. The Cadets would eventually score on the power play to go up 3-1 heading into the third. St. John’s found the back of the net again early in the third but the Hoyas were quick to respond less than a minute later with a goal by Pat Fitzgerald. After this goal the game turned chippy with many penalties and other infractions that went uncalled. The Hoyas were unable to capitalize on these opportunities late in the game and lost their first league game of the season. Prep looks to bounce back Wednesday night against IAC foe St. Stephens/Agnes and will finish off a busy week with a primetime matchup Friday night at Spalding.
