The Winston Churchill Hockey Club, Inc., established in September 1994, provides high school students at Winston Churchill High School the opportunity to enjoy the challenges, camaraderie, thrill and excitement of playing competitive ice hockey against other area high school teams.

The Churchill Junior Varsity (JV) team has a crucial role within the context of Club’s overall hockey program:

1. Skill Development and Inclusivity: The JV team accommodates a wider range of skill levels, promoting inclusivity and allowing more students to participate in the sport, even if they are not yet ready for varsity competition. This level allows them to receive more playing time and opportunities to improve their abilities without the intense competition of the varsity level. Players refine their hockey skills, including skating, stickhandling, passing, shooting, and game tactics under the guidance of coaches. 
    
2. Game Experience and Competitive Balance: The JV team provides a platform for players to gain valuable game experience. This includes learning how to read the game, make decisions under pressure, and execute strategies in a competitive setting. JV teams provide a more balanced and competitive environment for players who may not be ready to compete at the varsity level but still want to play competitively.
    
3. Depth Development and Transitioning to Varsity: The JV experience serves as a stepping stone to the varsity team. It allows players the opportunity to set personal goals, work towards those goals, and prepare themselves to be on the varsity roster in subsequent seasons. Having both a JV team and one or more Varsity teams in the overall Churchill Club helps maintain depth within the hockey program.  The JV players see what it takes to play at a varsity level and varsity players act as mentors for the JV players.

The Churchill Junior Varsity ice hockey team plays a crucial role in the long-term continuity and success of the overall hockey club, offering an opportunity for players to learn, grow, advance in hockey and life skills, while contributing to the overall success and depth of the hockey program.
