CSHL History

The Capital Scholastic Hockey League (CSHL) was formed in the summer of 2014 with the goal of creating a fun and competitive Varsity hockey experience for high schools in northern Virginia. The league adopted the informal motto "Kids play hockey" and established that every team would make the playoffs so that each club could use the regular season to develop all of their players.

The league opened in the fall of 2014 when Washington-Lee hosted Robinson in the first game for the new league. Four other clubs were charter members of the league: West Potomac, W.T. Woodson, Forest Park/Hylton, and Hayfield.

For the 2015-16 season, the league expanded to 8 teams and split into a North and South division. George Mason/Edison joined the North division that included Washington-Lee, West Potomac, and W.T. Woodson. West Springfield joined the South division that included Robinson, Forest Park/Hylton, and Hayfield.

Two more teams were added in the 2016-17 season when Lake Braddock (South) and T.C. Williams (North) joined the league.

The following year, Hayfield and George Mason/Edison combined their club, and Colgan was added to the South division, keeping the league at ten teams.

Expansion continued in 2017-18 when Bishop Ireton and Woodbridge joined.

CSHL teams are based out of three different ice rinks. Washington-Lee and George Mason/Edison/Hayfield are based out of MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. W.T. Woodson, West Potomac, and Bishop Ireton play their home games at Mount Vernon Rec Center in Fairfax County, and the remaining clubs play out of Prince William Ice Center in Dale City.
