Recent St. Mary's Ryken News

Tuesday’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Metro Division ice hockey tournament semifinal saw plenty of goals, 16 to be exact, as St. Mary’s Ryken outscored Bishop Ireton of Virginia 10-6 at the Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf to secure its ticket into today’s championship match.

Senior forward Josh Stevenson had four goals and senior forward Pete Behrens finished with eight points on three goals and five assists to lead the Knights to the win and advance them to play Good Counsel of Montgomery County in the WCAC final scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel.

“Honestly it felt great,” Stevenson said. “I just try to stay hydrated all day, keep focused and go out there and do what I need to do. Pete Behrens had a great game, a lot of fast movement, great shots and great goals. I hope to keep banging pucks in the net and win it all. I feel like we can tear up Good Counsel.”

St. Mary’s Ryken head coach Matt Billman was ecstatic about his team’s win, projecting them into Friday's final.

“Our plan going into it all season was to get to the game Friday which is the WCAC Championship,” Billman said. “So we are right where we need to be. We just need to go win it. It’s two wins in a row and we are just putting up points. Stevenson had four goals, Behrens had three goals and five assists. Those kids show up every night and it’s insane how many points they put up. Behrens has two hat-tricks in two straight games.”

After a slow start to the game, the Knights picked up the momentum when Stevenson scored his first goal of the night on Ireton goaltender Brendan Smith with 10 minutes 1 seconds left in the first period. Smith had 30 saves for the Cardinals on the night.

The lead extended to 2-0 with 2:33 left in the opening period when Behrens scored his first of the night, beating Smith on a breakaway. The first period ended with St. Mary’s Ryken up by two goals.

Ireton scored twice early in the second period to tie the game. Alex Simuro beat Knights senior goaltender Colin Lombardi to trim the deficit to 2-1 at 10:11. Lombardi had 20 saves on the night. The Cardinals scored again less than a minute later to tie the game off of an Arthur Seng shot that made its way past Lombardi and into the net.

“It was a great game overall,” said Seng, a freshman. “We played well offensively. We kept possession, but broke down on defense and gave away some breakaways. We just had to keep the mentality that we were still winning this and keep trying. I’ve been playing hockey since I was 5 and moved to Germany and picked up a lot of skills there. I hope to get Ireton their first win in any league. We were looking to win, but came up empty handed.”

With a tie game, the Knights felt the urgency as senior forward Troy Tallant scored on a shot that blazed past Smith to put the Knights back in the lead 3-2.

“We weren’t too familiar with them, so we just wanted to wear them out,” Billman said. “After the first period we noticed that they weren’t pressuring too hard, so we knew we could get some points off of breakouts. It’s a learning process and we planned around that.”

The next goal came from the Knights again when Jack Delaney scored his first goal to make it 4-2 at 5:41. Almost two minutes later, Behrens added his second goal on another breakaway to extend the lead to three goals.

The lead stretched to 6-2 on Stevenson’s second goal of the night just seconds later. Ireton ended the Knights’ stretch of goals with one of its own, but St. Mary’s Ryken took a 6-3 lead to the third.

Stevenson opened up the scoring again with his third goal of the night off of a pass from Behrens at 14:20 making it 7-3. Ireton’s Graham Kalan came back to rip one past Lombardi and trim the deficit to 7-4 at 12:26.

At 8:23, St. Mary’s Ryken scored again, this time off of a Behrens shot, making it 8-4. A minute later, Stevenson got his fourth and final goal of the night to stretch the advantage to 9-4.

The Cardinals scored twice more, but the Knights kept pushing and Tallant scored his second goal to end the scoring and secure the team’s trip to the final.

“It was nice to be part of the playoff experience,” Ireton head coach Tony Dicarlo said. “We were a little outmanned. St. Mary’s played really well and the better team won today. I thought we got a lot of good shifts from some of our younger guys, but it just wasn’t enough. Seng is a freshman and will be around hopefully another three years to help us out. We had high hopes and we didn’t want it to end today.”

The Knights are excited to make a run at the championship this year and have high hopes heading into Friday’s game.

“The championship is Friday and it’s our next game,” Billman said. “We hope to win it, and if we do that, then we are off to state playoffs. We played Good Counsel twice this season and lost to them both times. But I believe that you don’t lose to the same team three times in one season, so we expect to get a good game out of them.”

St. Mary's Ryken, Leonardtown Win in Ice Hockey Doubleheader

By Colin Stoecker, The Enterprise 01/23/2019, 2:00pm EST

Two hard-fought hockey contests took place Wednesday night at the Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf.

The first game, a Mid-Atlantic Prep Hockey League contest, saw St. Mary's Ryken score four goals in the third period to come out victorious against Mount St. Joseph of Baltimore, 6-3. In game 2, a Maryland Student Hockey League Southern Conference contest, Leonardtown led 4-1 after a period against Charles County Coop and ended up with an 11-4 win.

"It was pretty good. We started off slow, but we sped up at the end and started scoring," said Knights sophomore forward Austin Groff, whose goal put the Knights back in the lead for good. "I bounced it off the boards to Liam DeLong and he passed it back from right behind the goal and I just tapped it in and that got us into the lead. They were pretty fast. Sometimes we just let the lead go, but it was a good finish. I want to get as high as we can as a team."

The win for St. Mary's Ryken (3-2-1 in league play, 6-9-1 overall) was it's second in a row.

"It took us a while to get going. I believe it's the first game of the season that we've been scoreless through the first period," said Knights head coach Matt Billman. "It took us awhile, and we were sleeping there at the beginning. But I think Colin Lombardi our goalie played really well. We tightened up a bit, and once we did it was our game. Williams and Groff played well. We have two league games left, and we're sitting in a playoff spot right now."

St. Mary;s Ryken and Mount St. Joseph were scoreless through one period. Then less than a minute into the second period, the Knights struck first with a goal from senior forward Josh Stevenson. One minute later, Mount St. Joseph junior Matt Deshong slid a shot past Knights goaltender Colin Lombardi (14 saves) to tie the game at 1.

The Gaels took the leading on a blazing shot from freshman Tom Rybinski with 10 minutes 21 seconds left in the period. Near the end of the stanza, the Knights Tied the game at 2 with a goal from senior defenseman Matt Williams.

Mount St. Joseph opened the third period with a goal from junior Zachary Rozgonyi, making it 3-2, but St. Mary's Ryken scored four unanswered to pull away.

Senior forward Pete Behrens snuck one past Gaels sophomore goaltender Jake Williams (16 saves) to knot the game at 3 with 11:25 to play. Groff's goal then put the Knights up for good at 4-3, then Stevenson and Shane Gregan provided insurance goals for the win.

St. Mary's Ryken heads to Tampa Bay, Florida to play in a tournament this weekend.

St. Mary's Ryken Fields First-Ever All-Girls Ice Hockey Team

By Colin Stoecker, The Enterprise 01/16/2019, 1:00pm EST

When longtime hockey coach, player and enthusiast Chris Palombi set out to start a girls ice hockey team this past fall, he didn't expect such a large number of girls to show interest.

But with a little nudge from the school to get back into a head coaching position after as stint as the director of hockey operations, Palombi is now spearheading the St. Mary's Ryken first-ever all-girls ice hockey squad.

Palombi could tell there was an interest in a girls hockey team at St. Mary's Ryken after the Washington Capitals won their first-ever Stanley Cup championship in June of last year.

"Last school year, the girls were into the Capitals playoff run and I saw a lot of them wearing the gear around the school,: Palombi said.

Palombi decided to test the water by sending out an email and was shocked by the 40 responses he got back.

"It's new, we got it started at the end of October," Palombi said. "we had one returning player, sophomore captain Robyn Strauss. Four of five years ago, we had about four or five girls on the team. So this year at the beginning of the season we had a bunch of female students who wanted to be managers, and I asked them if they'd want to just play."

Palombi has been coaching at St. Mary's Ryken since 2008 when as a varsity head coach he took over the program from Jan Deregt.

"She started the program in 2002 and they got a hockey team together, and I took over the program after one year as an assistant," Palombi said. "I stepped down from coaching the varsity team a couple years ago to help balance with family, so we brought on the two assistant coaches to take over, Matt Billman and Cameron Beckner. I still help out behind the scenes, making sure the ice is booked, so they can focus on coaching and managing the team, and so for the girls team this year, I took over at the last second."

Starting a new hockey team, however, requires ice to skate on, and more importantly, skates, pads, helmets, and sticks.

"Hockey is a pay to play for the costs, which can get expensive," Palombi said. "We didn't have any gear and a nonprofit had a warehouse full of gear for donations. I applied for the grant and we got it. The Principal at St. Mary's Ryken was great to support us, too. And our returning captain Strauss was a good ambassador getting other girls on board."

Strauss, who is in her fifth year playing hockey, was voted team captain as she is one of two girls on the team who have ever played ice hockey before. She has played for the Southern Maryland Sabres, Nova Ice Dogs, and the Tri-City Eagles.

"I started out learning how to skate in some skills classes," Strauss said. "I think it is different with all girls. I played on a boys team ever since I started. It's different because boys check more, and with girl's it's a lot more focused on skill."

Strauss is excited to take part in a new team with new goals and is ready to lead the team of mostly novice players.

"It's really kind of cool because being the first for something is cool to be a part of," Strauss said. "It's a lot of fun, so it's new for everyone and we're all in the same boat, and I can be a leader. I've been trying to lead in the way that I was lead when I first started playing. I like teaching them some basic hockey skills. I just want everyone to improve, and take advantage of being a leader on the team."

Some girls who are joining the team fresh this year have experienced figure skating, but they will be wearing hockey pads for the first time.

"I think it is a little bit different for them because the blades are different, but they have muscles in their ankles already," Strauss said.

Strauss believes Palombi is the best coach that the team could have starting new this year.

"It's great that Palombi decided to do this," she said. "He is really passionate and brings a good energy to practices and games. Our coach gets everyone very excited about playing and that makes them try their hardest."

Getting a new team of mostly new skaters to learn the basics was a challenge that Palombi was excited about from the start. He did this by starting from the basics.

"We had about three players who played hockey before including Robyn," Palombi said. "Probably we didn't even have a handful of girls who had figure skated before, so it was a transition. Even for the first timers who had only done public skate, the first couple practices were great with them. They're very attentive and driven. I worked with a group of girls who had never skated before. We taught them how to push off and skate and then do a hockey stop."

Palombi had taken some time off from coaching to spend with his family, but he quickly realized that he couldn't get too far away from the sport that he loves.

"Hockey is in my blood," he said. "I've always missed coaching, and it's given me so much growing up. Playing as well as coaching, it's great seeing these new players develop a passion for the sport and competitiveness for playing the game. That riles me up to find ways to get the best out of them. I get excited to take it up a notch, and take on the challenges."

St. Mary's Ryken is playing as an independent team this season and get a lot of good competition in the Mid-Atlantic Girls Hockey League, while playing out of the Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf. Palombi has even booked the team a game at the Capital One Arena, home ice for the Washington Capitals.

"Because of how late we came in, we can't support having enough home games and the league games were already scheduled, so now we are an independent team," he said. "The Mid-Atlantic Girls Hockey League has Archbishop Spalding, Georgetown Visitation, St. John's and other area private schools, so we will play against those teams."

St. Mary's Ryken has five games this year with the next contest scheduled for Thursday.
