O'CONNELL BATTLES PAST CALVERT HALL, 3-1

O'Connell's Lex Smith had a goal and an assist in the Knights' 3-1 victory over Calvert Hall at the Medstar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington on Friday night.

Bishop O’Connell’s Lex Smith led the Knights (1-0 in MAPHL) with a goal and an assist, including the game winner in the second period, in the Knights’ 3-1 victory over Calvert Hall (0-2 in MAPHL) on Friday night at the Medstar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va.

O’Connell rewarded a raucous home crowd by jumping on the Cardinals with a goal by Kareem Al-Bashir just under two minutes into the game. Smith picked up the primary assist, with Cooper Corbett recording the secondary helper.

Smith’s eventual game winner came at 2:45 of the second period, giving O’Connell a 2-0 lead and control of the game. Al-Bashir and Corbett picked up assists on the play. However, Calvert Hall Freshman Robbie Thompson’s fore-checking paid off when he scored unassisted and the Cardinals shorthanded at 10:46 of the middle stanza.

Junior Jake Hill regained the two-goal lead less than three minutes later when he took a pass from Carter Thompson and beat Calvert Hall goaltender Ben Algatt.

The contest saw the teams take a combined 21 penalties.
